“Music is the universal language of mankind”

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Individual Lesson

The Individual Lesson is the time we are able to get to know each other and understand all the wonders of violin/viola playing.  Both the parent (practice partner) and student learn the steps to developing enjoyment through playing the instrument.

  • Each person grows in this step by step process at their own pace.

  • Every student/person is unique and each individual lesson is geared towards their own nature.

  • This nature is nurtured to learn with delight and excellence.

In the beginning, the parent (practice partner) takes notes during the lesson to help with home practice.   With steady listening to the recordings of pieces and home practice, the student learns progressively how to practice all the ins and outs of playing the instrument.

Through the discovery of violin/viola music, we prepare for many life skills:  communication, cooperation, composure with enjoyment in performance, finding solutions and so much more!

Group Class & Orchestra

Group class is an important part of reinforcing all the many things learned in an individual lesson. Playing your pieces within a group helps reinforce all the work done in individual lessons. Plus, it’s always fun!

The Pasadena Conservatory allows all my students to participate in their weekly group classes. If you are a new student auditioning for the first time, or a student auditioning into the next group class level, you will need to fill out your contact information along with a link to your entrance piece and two review pieces. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Pasadena Conservatory AUDITIONS (Due August 5th)

Orchestras: When students are ready they participate in youth orchestras, such as Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Solo Recitals

There are three solo recitals followed up by YouTube Premiere Recitals. These are held in:

  1. Fall (September)

  2. Winter (December)

  3. Spring (April-May)

Many friends and family live far away and cannot attend the in-person recitals, so I provide a YouTube Premiere recital arranged a couple of weeks after the in-person recital.  This allows distant friends and family to watch the recital and also allows students who were unable to attend the in-person recital, perform their piece!

My students participate in Certificate of Merit, a musical evaluation accomplished through the Music Teachers Association of California (M.T.A.C.).  This measurement gives some indication of the effort students have invested in this extracurricular activity, especially in completing applications for students.  It is part of goal setting and reason for celebrating accomplishment.

Testimonials

Group Events in my studio through the year:

The Bach Double Party
(or The Bach Double and Halloween Party! Or chosen Theme!)

This is always a favorite event for all students (and their families) who play Bach Double, Violin 1 or 2, 1st movement. The party originated with eagerness to celebrate the tremendous efforts and wonderful accomplishment of playing well and memorizing the Concerto in d-minor for two violins. We play the Bach Double in several fun musical games: enjoying the Bach Double all around! Amongst the games is the new Halloween Composer Bingo which includes prizes. And of course, we follow up with abundant amounts of treats.

Viva Viola Party! (for violists and their families)

Celebrating the joys of Viola playing is a wonderful musical bonding of viola pieces and players.  We play many pieces together, socialize, do musical games and of course,

We follow up with a potluck!

Performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at the Quakes Baseball (spring)

Performing at the Quakes is one of the highlights of the year!  We have the pleasure of performing The Star-Spangled Banner on the field and enjoying a Baseball Game, usually ending with a fireworks show!

We’ve even performed The Star-Spangled Banner at San Francisco’s Giants AT & T park!

Suzuki Violin Book 1 Party! (late spring, early summer)

The Book 1 Party involves students of all levels.  It’s a party playing Violin Book 1 pieces: all in playful fashions.  Composer Bingo, Name that tune and many more games thrill the evening of fun.  And of course, we follow up with abundant treats!

And:   Performances at Theme Parks when possible!

Next steps

  1. Email or call me. I look forward to hearing from you.  Finding the right ‘fit’ for you and your child helps create a friendly beginning.   (All levels from beginner to advanced are welcome!)

  2. Observe an individual lesson. We learn so much from observing others!  With both the parent and child attending an individual lesson to observe, you will get a sense of how we learn.   Observation also gives  an idea if this style is the right match for you.

  3. Learn About The Suzuki Method. The Suzuki method is a listening-based approach:

  • Like learning a language:

    • First a child listens to the sounds and parents repeat sounds and words with encouragement at every gurgle repeated! And when a word comes out: what a joy.

  • Every child can!

    • The potential for musical ability is present in every child, as is the ability to learn language. The creativity and flexibility of the Suzuki Method provides a means for matching the changing needs and growth rates of the individual students.

  • We are growing a ‘sky-scraper’ ability of creating amazing music.

    • A seed is planted and at first: we don’t see anything!  But we keep watering it, giving it sunshine and one day, we see a stem!

    • We keep repeating this process, it grows  and one day, we see a flower!

  • Music Note-reading is introduced as soon as the student is ready.

    • Reading music is an important part of playing an instrument.

  • We are creating a musical environment of affection, support, encouragement and understanding.
